CID arrests arms dealer from city, seize weapons

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested an arms dealer from the city and recovered 10 firearms and cartridges.

The accused, Imadul Mondal was remanded in police custody after being produced before a city court. Police suspect that the accused is the part of an arms smuggling racket that has been operating from the city. Another accused, who, was with Mondal at the time of police raid managed to flee the place.

Acting in a tip-off a team of CID officers on late Tuesday night, raided several places of Jadavpur and Santoshpur area and arrested Imadul. The investigating officers interrogated the accused to find out the names of other members of the arms smuggling racket. 

In the preliminary investigation, police came to know that the accused along with some others have been operating an arms smuggling racket from the city. As per the primary investigation, the CID officers suspect that the racket might have been smuggling arms to some neighbouring countries including Bangladesh. The accused were using Indo-Bangladesh border at Bongaon under North 24 Parganas to smuggle out the arms to the neighbouring countries.

During the interrogation, the accused has admitted his involvement in the racket and told the officers about the modus operandi. Police said that they have recovered huge ammunition from the possession of the accused.

Police also came to know during the course of investigation that the arms and ammunition were produced at Munger in Bihar and the accused used to bring the arms to the city. Police are investigating if the accused have any connection with international smuggling rackets. Senior officers may visit to Munger to investigate into the matter. The investigating officers did not divulge any further information in connection with the case. A detailed probe has been initiated.
