Chuck Hagel resigns as US defence secretary, official says

US defence secretary Chuck Hagel has resigned, a United States defence official said on Monday. The official added that that American President Barack Obama had accepted his resignation. Hagel will remain in the Pentagon’s top post until a successor is named, the official said.
