Chit fund agent found hanging in kitchen at Girish Park home

A chit fund agent committed suicide at Girish Park, Kolkata on Saturday night. Manoj Kumar Singh (42) was found hanging from the ceiling at his residence at Ramtanu Bose Lane.

The neighbour who spotted the body called up the police who took the body to the Medical College and Hospital.

The doctors declared him dead there. However, the family of the Singh lodged a complaint with police as an investigation was initiated.

Police learnt that Singh was alone there as his wife had gone to her parental house for someday.

Singh was cooking his own food and asked the neighbours to help him if required.

“I suddenly saw him hanging through the window which was open. I raised the alarm as other neighbours rushed in,” said a local woman.

Police informed Singh’s wife and other relatives about the incident.

The investigator learnt that Singh, a chit fund agent took several lakh from the depositor. But recently they demanded money from Singh.

“He had been looking demoralised since the last few days. We had asked the reason, but he did not reply. We thought that the depositors had threatened him,” said another neighbour.

However, the investigators have also learnt that Singh hid his profession in the locality, saying he is only a LIC agent. But he was actually a chit fund agent.

“Some people tried to make him sign a cheque forcefully on Saturday morning in his house. We need to know their identities,” said a police officer.

According to some neighbours, six people rushed to Singh’s house on Saturday morning. They threw utensils from the kitchen and shouted at him.

“We’ve learnt that Singh took money some of the local criminals and demanded it back soon. They might have threatened to kill him. He could not take the tension and commit suicide,” said an investigating officer.

However, no suicide note was recovered from the spot. The police are checking the call list of his mobile phone.
