China struggles to cope up with festival traffic

China struggled to cope with surging traffic on road, rail and air as millions of inbound passengers rushed home to celebrate the eight day national holiday to celebrate the mid Autumn Festival.
About 85 million hit the highways on the first day of the holiday chocking the arterial highways all over China, prompting the government to deploy helicopters to direct the traffic.
The surge was partially driven by a new government policy that has made most expressways in the country toll free during the holiday period for passenger cars with fewer than seven seats.
Sunday is the first day of China’s eight-day holiday bridging Mid-Autumn Festival today and the National Day holiday from Monday to Sunday.
Besides the roads, railways and airways also struggled to cope up as thousands lined up tickets to use special services.
China experiences the unique travel rush every year twice for the Mid Autumn festival and for the Chinese Lunar New Year. During these holidays, almost all Chinese move back and forth from their work places to spend time with their families in the rural areas.
