China shuts down dating websites for obscenity

China’s Internet watchdog has shut down 65 dating and other match-making websites for allegedly spreading obscene content.

“These websites allowed registration with false names, leaked customers’ information, connived some users’ fraud and spread obscene and lascivious content,” the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said.

“The circumstances were serious and the impact was terrible,” CAC said in a statement.

Fraud and violations of regulations on dating websites have become a public nuisance to millions of users, especially around the Spring Festival when people use these services more, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The campaign lists fraud rings, prostitution and fraudulent practices of service providers as
major targets.
