China, Afghanistan upgrades ties

China on Friday upgraded its ties with resource-rich Afghanistan to level of a strategic and cooperative partnership and pledged ‘selfless support’ for Kabul's fight against terrorism and promised to encourage Chinese investments in the war-torn country.
Battling Islamic militant outfits in the Uyghur Muslims dominated Xinjiang province bordering, Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK), China said it firmly supported Afghanistan's fight against terrorism.
The Chinese side firmly supports Afghanistan's efforts in combating terrorism and drug trafficking and safeguarding national stability, a joint statement issued after talks here between President Hu Jintao and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai said without directly naming Taliban.
‘As a reliable neighbour to Afghanistan, China will unswervingly stick to friendly policies and continue to provide sincere and selfless help to the country, promised its president,’ state-run Xinhua news agency quoted Hu as saying.
The advancement of bilateral relations marks a new step for the development of bilateral ties, said Hu, adding that it not only meets the fundamental interests of the two countries but also benefits world and regional peace, stability and development.
He suggested that the two sides expand cooperation in areas including the economy and trade, contracted projects, resource and energy development, agriculture and infrastructure. ‘The Chinese government will continue to encourage capable Chinese companies to invest in Afghanistan,’ he said. The two countries expressed ‘strong rejection’ of the ‘three forces’ of terrorism, extremism, separatism and organised crime, the joint declaration said.
The two sides agree to intensify exchanges and cooperation in security by way of jointly combating such transnational threats as terrorism, illegal immigration, illegal arms and drug trafficking and enhancing intelligence exchanges and border management, the declaration said. Karzai along with Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari was in Beijing to attend the just concluded 12th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a China backed regional security forum.
