Child drowns in open pothole

A 10-year-old boy drowned to death in a water pothole left open for construction of a hostel inside Lady Harding hospital in Mandir Marg area on Wednesday evening. Police registered a case of negligence against unknown offender after the demand of enquiry by the hospital staff on Thursday.

The victim, identified as Monty, drowned into the 10-feet pothole, allegedly left open by the construction company in the area of 85 block in hotel premises. He was sent to ICU after the incident, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The incident took place around 6:30 pm. Monty, a student of Class IV, was playing at the construction site of the hospital when the incident took place, said a police officer. The victim's father, Om Prakash, is an employee in hospital's mortuary.

After the incident, the hospital staff and people from the resident welfare association, collected at hospital's gate and started demanding action against the construction company. The police officials reached on the spot  and assured people for of timely action.

'A day after the incident, a case under Section 304 (causing death due to negligence) has been registered,' said a police officer.

The construction work is going inside the hospital for the last few weeks.
