Charred body of woman found, dowry death whiff

Mystery shrouds the death of a 22-year-old housewife whose charred body was found inside her in-laws house at Berhampore in Murshidabad on Thursday morning.

The incident had triggered tension in the locality. The victim’s family members alleged that the woman was killed by her husband and in-laws’ as they failed to pay the dowry as it was demanded by her in-laws. The victim Rehena Bibi’s family members lodged a complaint with the police against her in-laws alleging that she was murdered. But the police are yet to get the post-mortem report.

The victim who was originally from Natungram village of Murshidabad got married to Rafikul Seikh of Sagardighi around five years ago. After six months of their marriage, the victim’s husband and her in-laws started forcing her to bring more money from her parents. The situation turned worse for her when she refused to approach her parents for any more money and they started beating her up.

It was alleged that Rafikul used to torture her both mentally and physically as her parents could not give them the amount of money they had demanded. As a result, the victim woman had to face torture at her in-laws house. Police said that Rafikul works as carpenter. The family members of the victim told the police that the woman was set on fire by her husband and in-laws.

On the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim’s family members, police have started a probe. The accused and his family members fled the spot after the incident. Police are conducting a raid in the nearby areas to nab the accused. Police have sent the body of the victim to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police are also interrogating the local people in this connection.
