Char Dham yatra is backbone of Uttarakhand, resume it soon: BJP

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state chief Tirath Singh Rawat has demanded that Char Dham yatra should be resumed as early as possible. He said, 'Char Dham yatra is the backbone of our Uttarakhand economy.  The state government should expedite the rescue and rehabilitation process, and all the washed away roads and broken bridges should be re-built without any delay. Thousands of families have become jobless due to halted pilgrimage as it is the peak season. The livelihood of many families in Garhwal and Kumaon mandal depends on the arrivals of pilgrims/tourists from other states.’

He added that the visit of three former CMs namely Maj Gen BC Khanduri, Bhagat Singh Koshyari and Ramesh Pokhriya in the devastated-hit villages was timely and praise-worthy in the sense that at that time no politician pay visits to these villages. They revived the dampened spirits of villagers and help in every way that was practically possible at that time.

He said that statement by Uttarakhand speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal and disaster minister Yashpal Arya regarding death toll in natural disaster never matched with the death toll figures given by state government. More than one month has passed, the state government is still in confusion over the death tolls and missing pilgrims/tourists.

He criticised the state government by saying that rescue operations was started on third day of the tragedy, had it been started on time, the number of casualties has gone down.
