Chaos prevails at mayors' offices

Eight days have gone by since the formal oath taking. But the offices of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in East Delhi Municipal Corporation lack even the basic facilities.

Situation in case of other office bearers and government officials is worse still. BJP leaders have warned the government to go on strike if the situation is not improvement within this week.

'We will install a tent outside the corporation building and sit there. The government must take it seriously and provide all the basic necessities to the corporation,' said Mahek Singh, BJP candidate for the post of chairman of standing committee.

'The cabin allotted to me does not even have restroom. The office also lacks basic facilities such as telephone connection, computers, fax machine and water,' added Singh.

Deputy Mayor Usha Shashtri is not using her office, complaining that it is too small for a deputy mayor. 'The office does not have any facility and it is way too small. I will not be able to accommodate any guests in it. I need more spacious office for which I had forwarded request to officials,' said Shashtri.

The offices in East Delhi look as if it was put together adhoc. 'At least, we need office equipment that function properly,' added Shashtri.

Because of this prevailing chaos, all other developmental works in the East Delhi Municipal Corporation have come to a standstill.

'The government has allotted four floors for corporation but ground and third floor had not been vacated so far. In fact, we need the entire five-storey building to accommodate our staff,' said Mayor Dr Annapurna Mishra.

To make matters worse, Mishra is yet to receive a bungalow and car. On Tuesday afternoon, some senior officials of Education and Health Department had to return as there was no space allotted to them. The sanitation, health, education and town planning departments are yet to get space. The corporation is temporarily being run from the DSIIDC office in Patpargunj. There is no dedicated parking facility as well.

Similar situation prevails in south Delhi. 'I need more spacious office to accommodate guests. This office in not suited for Mayor,' said Savita Gupta, who has been allotted an office in south Delhi.

In Civic Centre, the offices of per-existing MCD has been allotted to North Delhi Municipal Corporation and office bearers have been allotted new cabins.
