Centre mulls country’s first medical device park in Guj

Union Chemical and Fertilisers Minister Ananth Kumar on Wednesday announced that his ministry is planning to set up country’s first medical device park in Gujarat and Gandhinagar will be the centre of drug discovery.

Thanking Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel for providing 60 acres for the premier pharmaceutical institute, the minister said: “India is exporting medicines to about 200 countries, but we are still dependent on other countries for medical devices. As per PM Narendra Modi’s vision of Make in India, we want to make the country a self-sufficient in the field of medical devices, he added.

“The medical device park will have ‘centre of excellence’ in which research for medical device will be conducted. The new institution will emerge as a vibrant research and development centre dedicated in the field of medical devices.”

“The Centre is planning to expand Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology (CIPET) at Sanand soon after receiving additional land from the state government,” Kumar said after laying down the foundation stone of permanent campus of National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) at Gandhinagar.
