Centre appoints IIP to showcase Darjeeling tea

Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) has been assigned to showcase Darjeeling tea in the international markets.

The Centre has decided to popularise tea produced in various indigenous gardens in the global markets. To attract more customers, tea will be packed in exclusive containers. Centre has appointed IIP, an expert in this field, for the job.

IIP was engaged with the Tea Board in packaging tea which was exported to other countries. But later the responsibility was shifted to other private companies. A huge amount of tea produced in Darjeeling and Assam was being imported to various countries as they had a huge demand in various international markets.

But, recently the Tea Board received complaints from various European countries and Russia as they claimed that the quality of Darjeeling tea was gradually deteriorating. These countries also raised question on packaging of the tea. It was learnt that the tea packets which were exported got damaged. In some cases the tea used to get soiled due to poor packaging. Darjeeling tea, which was so famous in foreign markets, was losing its popularity.

This had prompted the Tea Board and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to take some steps to restore the goodwill of Darjeeling and Assam tea in the global market.
