Celebrating struggles and victories

Little recognition or no recognition of a particular sport reflects a lot about the society in which we live. It is not important for women boxers like Sarita Devi, Mary Kom and Chhoto Loura, as they’ve won laurels for the country and their love for the sport is immense.

To showcase the struggle, journey and immense potential of our Indian boxers, documentary filmmakers Ameesha Joshi and Anna Sarkissian are showcasing their documentary titled-‘With This Ring’ at India International Centre in the national Capital.

They have fought against all odds to become who they are today and they’re relishing their independence. Their journey is one roller coaster ride and today they’re one step away from being qualified in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

To empower women and to show their daily struggles as a woman, one has to closely watch them and the filmmakers flew down to four different countries and followed their regimen to document them.

These women trained hard and to be a part of such a journey, it takes a lot of effort as one has to work on all the aspects of storytelling. What one could see was the sportsperson’s struggles, victories, personal life and their tussle with the society, which is not too open-minded about women’s involvement in sports.

Ameesha Joshi, co-director and producer, ‘With This Ring’ said: “Our purpose was to uncover the politics that these athletes face on top of all the challenges that they overcome, which is unfortunate but true.”
