CCTV cameras to be installed on Mandarmani beach for better surveillance

The state government has decided to install Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras on the beaches of Mandarmani, Digha and Tajpur to keep a close eye out at the happenings there. In the first step, the installation will be made at Mandarmani, and then it would be continued at Digha and Tajpur as well.

It is to be remembered that three Calcutta boys, two of them studying in the UK, were killed, a few weeks ago on a Sunday in a head-on collision between two cars. The revellers treated the beach like a racing track, and drove the cars in high speed. Shivraj Naskar, Suraj Dasgupta and Vaibhav Shandilya, all of them 21 years of age and former students of Calcutta International School, had apparently driven all night to reach Mandarmani before the incident happened.

Soon after the incident, the administration decided to stop the entry of cars in the beach. But tension still loomed large as there was no such adequate watch on the beach. It is also to be remembered that a youth, Tarun Ghosh, was killed when he attempted paragliding at the beach in 2015.

“Mandarmani, Digha and Tajpur are tourist destinations. Thousands of people come in those places from across the globe. The installation of CCTV cameras were necessary for adequate security measures there,” said Reshmi Kamal, the District Magistrate if East Midnapore.
