CCEA may allow panel to clear highway projects below `500 cr

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs may on Thursday approve a proposal to allow a committee headed by Road Secretary to clear highway projects with less than Rs 500 crore investment.

According to sources, the proposal is to allow a committee under the PPPAC (Public Private Partnership Approval Committee) to approve highway projects with less than Rs 500 crore investment.

'The projects over Rs 500 crore investment will be approved by PPPAC, headed by Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs,' sources added.
At present, PPPAC comprises Secretary - Department of Economic Affairs (in the Chair), Secretary - Planning Commission, Secretary - Department of Expenditure, Secretary - Department of Legal Affairs and Secretary of the Department sponsoring a project. Currently, there is no representation from the Road Ministry.

The Ministry is likely to soon approach Public Private Partnership Approval Committee (PPPAC) to re-start work on the six-laning of the Panipat-Jalandhar road on NH-1.The project which started in 2009, got delayed due to numerous reasons including land acquisition issues, delay in approval of design by Railways and relocation of the toll plaza.
