CBI torturing my aides: Maran

DMK leader and former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran has alleged that the CBI was out “to fix him” to please a senior RSS leader. The statement came a day after the arrest of Maran’s close aide V Gowthaman in connection with a telecom scam related case.
CBI on Wednesday night arrested Maran’s former Additional Private Secretary Gowthaman besides Chief Technical Officer S Kannan and electrician LS Ravi of Sun TV network. All of them were found to be involved in alleged allotment of more than 300 high-speed telephone lines to the Maran’s residence in Chennai which were extended to his brother Kalanithi Maran’s TV channel. Maran, who met DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Thursday, accused the CBI of framing him ‘intentionally’ to please the RSS, the ideological mentor of the ruling BJP. “I am being singled out. The CBI is fixing me to please an RSS ideologue from Tamil Nadu,” he alleged, while claiming that the probe agency is ‘torturing and forcing the arrested’ men to give statements against him.
On the other hand the CBI has claimed that when Maran was Telecom Minister between 2004 and 2007, he used more than 300 government-owned phone lines for Sun TV, the media network owned by his brother, Kalanithi Maran. The CBI has named the former minister and officials of the state-owned telephone company BSNL in an FIR or police complaint filed in 2013. In 2011, investigation was started after four years of complaints that a virtual telephone exchange had been set up at Maran’s house.
