CBI team reaches Badaun to probe gang rape, murder

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team on Friday reached here to probe the gang rape and murder of two teenage girls in Ushait area of the district.

‘A 15-member CBI team has arrived here for the probe. We are giving them necessary documents,’ Superintendent of Police L R Kumar said.

Two weeks after the bodies of the cousin sisters were found hanging from a mango tree at a village in Badaun, about 300 kilometres from the state capital Lucknow, CBI took over the probe from the Uttar Pradesh Police on Thursday.

CBI has mentioned in its FIR that the state police did not act when people approached them with the complaint of girls being kidnapped.

The agency has named two police officials -- Chhatrapal Yadav and Sarvesh Yadav -- along with three brothers -- Pappu, Awadhesh and Urvesh Yadav -- who have been accused of hatching a criminal conspiracy to commit gang rape, murder and violation of provisions of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO).

The two girls, aged 14 and 15 years, were allegedly gang-raped and murdered and their bodies were found hanging from a tree a day after they went missing on May 27 in a village in the Ushait area in Badaun.
