CBI nabs its own, arrests officer probing Coalgate

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) SP, who is also the Chief Investigating Officer probing the coal block allocation scam, and an inspector were caught by their own agency for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 7 lakhs on Friday.

The CBI Internal Intelligence Unit nabbed SP Vivek Dutt in an operation that was personally supervised by the agency’s director Ranjit Sinha. However, CBI sources said the bribe is not related to the
coal scam.

Cash has been recovered from Dutt. An inspector Rajesh Karnatak has also been caught. ‘They allegedly were taking bribe from an Alwar-based private person Dinesh Gupta who was facing a Delhi police case,’ the CBI sources said.

The CBI is set to inform the Supreme Court about the case. The agency cannot change the current Investigating Officer as per the direction of an SC order. The CBI officials said that the exchange of money took place outside the CBI headquarter on Friday evening.

The CBI inspector was taking money on behalf of the SP. According to sources, it was a trap case wherein the inspector was arrested red-handed receiving money from Gupta. ‘We have been trying to catch the officer red handed. We had a tipoff that he may be involved in such activities, the CBI officials said. Vivek Dutt was directly recruited in the CBI as deputy SP.

He was posted in the economic offences wing (EOW) of the agency. ‘Though he was involved in the coal blocks allocation probe, the arrest  had nothing to do with the probe,’ clarified a senior CBI official.

SP Vivek Dutt was allegedly asked to use his influence with the Delhi police officials to settle the case of the Alwar-based private person.
