Car kills toddler while backing, driver arrested

A two-and-a half-year-old girl was allegedly crushed to death by a Honda City car in the Bharat Nagar area of North-west Delhi on Thursday afternoon. According to the police, they have arrested the errant driver, identified as Mobin. Sources said that after the minor girl was crushed under the left tyre of the car, her grandfather took her to a nearby hospital where she was refused treatment. He told cops that it was due to the delay in treatment that his granddaughter died.

Police said that the incident took place on Thursday at around 2.30 pm in the Ashok Vihar Phase 5 area when Avantika, the deceased, was playing in a parking lot next to where her grandfather, Mahku Lal (46) irons clothes.

The accused, Mobin, trying to take out the car, allegedly reversed the vehicle and crushed Avantika under the wheels of the Honda City car, who was standing behind the vehicle. The  owner, Bobby Mistry, under whom Mobin works reportedly raised an alarm to inform Mobin about the child but by that time, the child was already crushed.

Sources said Avantika’s grandfather, Mahku Lal who was present at the spot, took the child to a nearby hospital in Ashok Vihar area but was refused treatment due to lack of facilities.

Bleeding profusely, Avantika was taken to Babu Jag Jivan Ram hospital in Jahangirpuri in the Honda City car, driven by Mobin. The doctors tried to resuscitate her but in vain. Sources said that Avantika lived with her parents and grandfather in the Shalimar Bagh area.

Police said that they registered a case at the Bharat Nagar police station and arrested Mobin under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigation is underway.
