Car hits cop, errant driver at large

In a suspected case of drunk driving, a police constable was severely injured after he was allegedly hit by a speeding car in South-east Delhi’s Nizamuddin area in the wee hours on Sunday. The incident took place around 2 am when the constable, Jasveer, who was deployed at a picket with a team, comprising three other officials headed by a sub-inspector, was hit by the car.

The speeding car had first rammed into the picket and the officials deployed there had to jump out of its way. Jasveer’s reaction was not fast enough and he ended up being run over by the vehicle.
Jasveer was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, said a police official.

The errant driver, who is yet to be identified, is on the run. From statements of witnesses and a spare part recovered from the spot, it is suspected that it was a luxury car, said the official. It is also suspected that the driver was in an inebriated state, as officials deployed at the picket said he suddenly lost control and sped towards the picket.

A case of rash driving, endangering lives of others on road and other sections of the IPC has been registered against the errant driver. The police are monitoring CCTV grabs, obtained from cameras installed near the police picket,  to identify the culprit, the official said.

Jasveer, a native of Sonepat in Haryana, is posted at Hazrat Nizamuddin police station.  He is said to be out of danger, said the official.
