Car crash on NH-6 in Howrah claims three lives

Three persons were killed in a road accident that occurred at Howrah’s Bagnan town on National Highway 6 early Sunday morning. The incident led to a traffic snarl in the area.

The deceased have been identified as Mashud Mondal (32), Zahir Mondal (27) and Sahid Mondal (22). The trio was travelling into the city from East Midnapore in a car.

Eyewitnesses told police that the car was being driven at a high speed and after the driver lost control of the car it hit the divider.

Due to the car’s excessive speed, the intensity of the crash was so high that it overturned after hitting the divider and fell around 40 feet away from the spot of the accident.

Local people told police that they heard a loud thud and saw that the car was in the air for few 
moments before falling near a road side ditch.

Some locals rescued the three occupants of the car, which was fully damaged in the crash, and took them to Uluberia Hospital, where the doctors declared them brought dead. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.

The incident led to a traffic jam on NH-6 for a while on Sunday morning.

Police soon reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Many vehicles were stranded after the accident.

Normalcy was restored after police removed the mangled car from the spot.

Police said that the victims were all businessmen and residents of Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas.

According to preliminary investigation, police suspect that the youth were in an inebriated state when the accident took place. Police also recovered bottles of alcohol from the car.

They have started a detailed probe into the accident. Police said that Masud Mondal was driving the car at the time of the accident. They are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
