‘Can you imagine killing your baby?’

The brutal gangrape of a physiotherapy student on 16 December in Delhi has rattled the country and members of the film fraternity are no exceptions. And now, apart from making their voices heard on social networking sites, a host of musicians, actors and directors from Bollywood have come together in a music video that talks of changing mindsets against women.

Director-producer Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra will share screen space in the music video that has been initiated by the government and was shot recently for Save The Girl Child programme. The song is sung by Shankar Mahadevan and Sunidhi Chauhan and is called
Betiyaan
.

Rakeysh says he did this as the first baby step to bring about a change. ‘I became a part of this video, may be because somewhere there’s guilt in me as an individual, guilt as a family member, guilt as a neighbour, guilt as a citizen of this country.

‘This guilt exists because I feel that we haven’t done much in our action for the girl child. This is the first baby step from my end to go forward and make a difference,’ he said in a statement.

‘It is heartbreaking, to say the least, it is the darkest emotion for somebody to kill their own baby. Can you imagine somebody killing their own babies? I think we should all be guilty for it. It has been going on for centuries in our country and we have let it go on for far too long. All we have to do is to take a pledge that we will not let this happen. We should bring the people responsible to task,’ he said.

The video that will release next month also stars Shilpa Shetty, Shamita Shetty, Hema Malini, Nagarjuna, Raveena Tandon among others.
