Cabinet reshuffle kicks off with Joshi’s entry

As a potential precursor to the much touted cabinet reshuffle, after Trinamool Congress ministers resigned on Friday evening, CP Joshi was given the additional charge of railway ministry, held earlier by Mukul Roy. He also holds the portfolio of Road Transport and Highways currently.

While on Saturday political circled were abuzz with the meeting which took place between prime minister Manmohan Singh and President Pranab Mukherjee. The main focus of this meet was on the  anticipated cabinet reshuffle, which was although expected earlier in this month, but due to the FDI crisis faced by the government, dates were pushed ahead.

Sources in the government say most likely the reshuffle is expected by Tuesday, before the   President Mukherjee will leave on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir on 26 September.

There are also talks within several quarters of the political environ, that Joshi getting railways as an additional charge is a stop-gap arrangement, will after the reshuffle this ministry will ultimately be handled by prime minister himself. The much-awaited Cabinet rejig has been delayed as the UPA-II government and the Congress were focusing on talks to resolve the ongoing crisis, after the Opposition as well the TMC openly criticised the government’s decisions on FDI in retail, increasing diesel prices and lowering cap on LPG cylinders.

There have been clear indications from sources within the government that during this reshuffle the top four ministries which includes- home, finance, defence and ministry of external affairs, will remain untouched. While there will be a lot of new faces who will make their début in the council of ministers.
