Cabinet approves welfare plan for journalists

The Delhi cabinet on Monday approved a proposal seeking the institution of a journalist welfare scheme for those who report about the city, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said.

Journalists covering developments in the city have repeatedly been demanding a welfare fund. Working journalists duly accredited by the city government will be covered under the scheme.

The scheme will provide an ex-gratia relief to journalists and their dependent families in case of death or permanent disability or in case of any other exigency.

A maximum of Rs 3 lakh will be provided to the family on account of death of a city journalist or a maximum of Rs 2 lakh in case of permanent didisability rendering the journalist incapable of earning a livelihood.
