Goyal launches 1000-mw NTPL thermal power station in TN

Chennai: Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railways and Coal, has dedicated the 1,000-mw Coal based Thermal Power Station of Neyveli Tamil Nadu Power Ltd (NTPL), Thoothukudi, a Joint Venture between NLC India Ltd. and TANGEDCO, and 150-mw Solar Power Projects of NLC India Ltd, situated at Ramanathapuram and Virudhanagar Districts in a grand function held at Harbour Estate, Thoothukudi on Monday in the presence of CMD, NLCIL , Directors of NLCIL, Union and State Ministers, MPs and Senior officials of NLCIL, NTPL and TANGEDCO.

The 2x500 mw coal-fired Thermal Power Project of NTPL is a Joint Venture between NLCIL & TANGEDCO with an equity participation of 89:11.

Apart from having coal linkages from Mahanadi Coal Fileds (MCL) & Eastern Coal Fields Ltd (ECL), the plant

uses imported coal too. to meet the additional coal requirements.

Once the Talabira Mines start functioning, this plant will get coal from NLC India Ltd's own mines only. The plant also uses Lignite from the NLC India Ltd Mines by around 10 per cent of its Coal requirements by blending the Lignite & Coal.

The commercial operations of Units I and II were declared on June 18, and August 28, 2015. NTPL Thermal Power Station contributes to the nation's requirement by providing uninterrupted power supply for households, agriculture, industrial and commercial establishments.

Tamil Nadu is a major beneficiary of this plant, apart from the other southern states.

Tamil Nadu is the sole beneficiary of the 150-mw renewable Power Plants of Virudhanagar and Ramanathapuram districts, commissioned and dedicated to the Nation on Monday. So far, NLCIL has installed 591 mw Solar Power and 51 mw Wind power plants in various parts of Tamil Nadu. Also, 759 mw Solar Power projects are under execution in Tamil Nadu.

NLCIL has an installed capacity of 4784.50 mw of Power with a pan-India presence, of which 3890 mw Thermal Power and 642 mw Renewable power projects are in Tamil Nadu and TANGEDCO is the major beneficiary. Further, 2,980 mw Thermal Power Plants and 776.5 mw Solar Power Plants are under construction.

NLCIL has an ambitious Corporate Vision to become a 21,000-mw power generating and 123.15-mtpa mining company by 2025 with projects taken up in other states, namely Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, the Andamans and Jharkhand apart from Tamil Nadu.

NLCIL recently signed an MoU with the Government of Tamil Nadu for setting up various mine and Power projects with an investment of around `23,800 crore during the Global Investors' Meet held at Chennai in January 2019 to mainly benefit the State of Tamil Nadu.
