DoT portal Tarang to bring radiation level updates

Come April and one will be able to check the radiation status of nearby towers. The Department of Telecom (DoT) is all set to roll out Tarang portal that will allow users to monitor radiation levels on their smartphones. The portal, according to Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha, would be launched soon after the Budget Session of the Parliament is adjourned sine die on April 12.

"The status of the towers will be available on the portal which will be launched in the month of April. The portal would help consumers in getting the radiation level of towers checked on their request, which would be informed to them through different means of communication by the department," Sinha told Millennium Post.
The portal would help in eliminating the myths about the negative impact of electromagnetic radiation (EMF) emissions from telecom towers by creating awareness among people.

"Nowadays, mobile connectivity and broadband have become a necessity and without suitable infrastructure for this, we cannot make our society cashless. The misconceptions are doing the rounds that electromagnetic emission from towers cause harmful impact on health, but there is no study on it that has established this fact," Sinha said on the sidelines of launch of postal stamp on Club Scouts to commemorate centenary year of Cub Scouts in India and abroad.

"The portal is aimed at making people aware of the fact that radiations from towers are not harmful as the permissible limit for the emission in the country is much lesser than those in other countries. Installing more towers is need of the hour to meet the demand and it could be done by breaking all prevailing misconceptions," Sinha said, adding that the government is very much concerned about the public health.
