Bus overturns on shanties injuring 50

A bus overturned on roadside shanties injuring around 50 people while it was trying to overtake another vehicle. The incident has happened at West Midnapore’s Belda on Tuesday. Police said, two racing bus were going towards Digha, one of which toppled on shanties causing severe injuries to 50 people.

Police said those two vehicles were racing against each other. A bumper on the road had overturned the bus and it fell on the shanties. The injured were taken to the local health centre. “There were passengers and drivers among the injured. They were critical and some of them were taken district hospital,” said a police officer.

The buses going to Digha from Keshpur as most of the passengers were residents of East and West Midnapore district. “Most of them were vegetable traders, masons and fish traders who were going to Digha market for selling their goods. The two bus drivers were quarrelling with each other using slangs over lifting passengers on the middle of the roads,” said the officer. The two drivers were arrested. “Racing vehicles and buses have been regular affairs here. They have made this road a terror zone. We have complained to the police time and again. I think police should take serious step against racing vehicles,” said a local resident.

However, state government’s slogan of “Safe drive, Save life” reiterated by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has inspired police to take actions. “Police have tried hard and the locals have helped them a lot. But these errant drivers were unruly. They should be punished,” said a local resident.

The two buses were seized by the police and a cleaning team has been pressed into the action to initiate work as soon as possible.
