Bus driver, conductor arrested for molesting woman near Raj Bhavan

The driver and conductor of a private bus were arrested for allegedly molesting a 25-year-old woman passenger near the Raj Bhavan here on Saturday night, a protected zone of the city, a Kolkata Police official said on Sunday.

The driver Abdul Aziz and helper Gautam Chakraborty were remanded in judicial custody till May 26 after they were produced before the Bankshall Court on Sunday. 

Police said the woman had boarded the private bus on route 213 that ply from Taltala to Babughat. 

She was returning to her in-law’s residence and her father was accompanying her. They had boarded the bus from Taltala and they had to reach Babughat. 

The driver stopped the bus when it reached near Raj Bhavan and asked all the passengers to get down. 

Some passengers had got down without protest, but the victim’s father raised his voice and asked the reason for dropping everyone before reaching the destination. 

Both the driver and the helper had allegedly started misbehaving with the man and he was being allegedly abused by them. 

As told to the police, the accused told the man that it was their wish that where they will stop plying the bus. 

They beat up the man when he forced them to take the passengers up to Babughat. The duo molested the woman when she went ahead to save her father. 

The woman had dialled the emergency helpline number of the police. 

The policemen patrolling in the area reached the spot within a few minutes and arrested the duo. 

The police helped the victims to reach their destination.

A police officer said some routes leading to Babughat were closed as a cricket match was going on in Eden Gardens stadium and the driver refused to take the passenger to Babughat as he had to take the alternate route which is a bit longer.
