Burglar alarm at posh Lodhi Road apartment complex

Lodhi Road Complex, in posh south Delhi’s Lodhi Road area, seems to be under constant watch of burglars. More than 40 thefts have taken place at the complex in the past six months.

The Lodhi Road Complex, situated near the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, consists of approximately 2,000 flats, inhabited by government employees. Despite the fact that the Lodhi Colony police station is just a few metres away from the complex, the police has failed to put a stop to the rising incidences of crime in the complex.

According to sources, most of the thefts were committed by burglars, who came disguised as a  postman, courier boy or a representative of a service provider.
One of the residents said, 'The burglars attack flats where the owners are out the whole day and only return late in the evening. It would seem that they keep a close watch on the habits of the inhabitants before striking.’

In the most recent case, said a police official, flat no. 1485, Lodhi Road Complex, was burgled when the husband-and-wife couple living in the flat were at work. Swayambari (name changed), a neighbour who had seen the thieves hanging outside the flat but had not been aware of their motive, told Millennium Post, ‘I saw two men standing outside the flat in the first week of July. When I asked them about their identity, they introduced themselves as courier boys. Suspicious, I asked for their identity cards, but they said that they don’t carry one, before quickly leaving. In the evening, we found the locks on the door were broken.’

The neighbours informed the police. When the residents returned home, they found jewellery and other valuables had been stolen.

Rajkumar (secretary of Resident Welfare Association) Lodhi Road Complex said, ‘We have told the guards to be alert and also requested the residents to raise an alarm if they notice anything suspicious.'

According to sources in police department, the most commonly reported thefts have been those of cars, bikes and bicycles. 'We have posted many beat constables near the complex,' the official said.
However Dinesh, a resident, complained that the police are reluctant to register a complaint whenever approached.
