‘Buildings were crumbling all around’

Even as reports of recovered dead bodies and damage to property continue to trickle in from Uttarakhand, many have survived to narrate the horror they lived through after the flash floods.

One such story was delineated to Millenium Post by four friends who had gone there to visit the Kedarnath temple from Delhi. Kuldeep Verma, Pradeep Sharma, Prakash Gupta and Mahender Singh were sleeping in a hotel when they were woken up by a man telling them about the flood water outside.

‘We ran outside the hotel and saw buildings falling all around like a pack of cards, said Mahendra.  Wasting no time, the friends left the hotel and headed uphill. They picked up some biscuits from a nearby shop that was still open.

When they reached a police station after hours of walking, they were turned away by the officers posted there.
The four went further uphill and took shelter in a hut for three days. Later, the army found them and provided them with food. They, however, had to come downhill on their own.
