BSP worker sets himself on fire

Piqued over the misuse of Dr BR Ambedkar's name by parties for political purposes, a Bahujan Samaj Party [BSP] worker self immolated at Mehta Park in Azamgarh in broad daylight, the police said on Monday. Superintendent of Police Vijay Meena confirmed about the self-immolation and recovery of a suicide note.

According to police sources, Baliram Prasad, a native of Sidhauri, poured kerosene and immolated himself in the park  at around 1100 hrs on Monday. He succumbed to his burns before he could be taken to hospital, the SP said.

Prasad was also associated with Ambedkar Samaj Party.

In the suicide note, the victim alleged that the political parties were taking the name of Dr B R Ambedkar just to get political mileage. These political parties were cheating dalits by doing nothing for them, he said.

Without naming Mayawati or BSP, he said that leaders of a particular political party was minting money through illegal means. He further wrote in his suicide note that leaders like him have toiled hard all their lives but were facing bad times now and that it was unfortunate.

He also said the idols of Dr Ambedkar were being damaged every day. 'No body respects him now,' Prasad wrote.
