‘BSP turned state into lab of loot’

Blaming the previous BSP government for 'unprecedented organised corruption' in all departments, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday said the state was turned into a laboratory of loot in the past five years.

No department was left where organised corruption was not at its peak... such that was not seen ever before... the state was turned into an laboratory of loot in the past five years. All limits of corruption were crossed,' he said. Yadav was intervening in the debate in the state Assembly on the Governor's address to the joint session of the Legislature.

Referring to BSP members who had walked out before his intervention, Yadav said they did not want to hear him as they knew he would speak on the situation during the previous government. He said funds which could have brought prosperity to the state were spent on setting up parks and stone statues. It was perhaps for the first time that statues of a living person was set up by the former Chief Minister, he said and questioned as to how she could be considered among great people.

'Statues were set up on prime land,' Yadav said and added, 'Machines were used to count notes (earned through wrong means).' He said that because of the resources crunch created by the previous regime, his government was facing problems in preparing the budget. However, at the same time, he assured the House that all promises made in the election manifesto would be fulfilled.' Referring to power crisis in the state, Yadav, who also holds the energy portfolio, said nine MOUs were signed during the BSP government but none could take shape and the situation is such that they all would expire on 10 June. The present government is facing a precarious situation in this regard, he said, adding concrete steps would be taken to ensure better power supply.

'We have inherited a debt of Rs 25,000 crore in the power sector alone of which Rs 18,000 crore are of the banks there had also been corruption in the purchase of power which was up to Rs 13 per unit,' he said.

Recalling as to how atrocities were committed on the people and members of the opposition parties during the previous government, he said farmers demanding better compensation for the land acquired for constructing roads were killed.

Referring to his government's decision to withdraw cases filed against the farmers in Tappal, Bhatta and Parsaul (which had seen firing on farmers over land acquisition), he said more industries should come in the state but not at the cost of farmers and promised that if required they would be given compensation which could also be above the circle rates.
