Brave cop shot dead while averting robbery bid

In light of the incident, state honours were given to the slain constable at the New Police Lines ground in Kingsway Camp which was attended by Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma. Meanwhile, the Delhi government announced Rs 1 crore compensation to the family of the martyred constable who lost his life while on duty.

Police said that at around 9.20 pm, Meena, who sells fruits and vegetables on a cart on the Samosa Chowk was returning home when unidentified men came and tried to rob her. Constable Anand who was returning from Metro Vihar to the picket in Sector 5 after patrolling duty witnessed the incident.

Meena told police that Constable Anand somehow caught hold of two of the culprits. To rescue his accomplices, the third culprit fired in the air to scare the constable. Undeterred, Constable Anand held on to the two miscreants. The third miscreant then fired at Anand’s chest and abdomen. Bleeding profusely, the constable fell on the ground and all the culprits fled from the spot.

Meena made a PCR call after which Constable Anand was rushed to Maharishi Valmiki hospital where Anand was declared dead on arrival. After post-mortem and full state honours, the constable’s body was handed over to his family who cremated him in Sonepat, Haryana.

Senior police officers of the Outer district said that based on the version of the woman, they have got sketches of the two accused made. They are also scanning CCTV footages of the area. Sources said that in the preliminary investigation, police found that the accused seem to belong from Sonepat.

Based on the eyewitnesses’s statement, police have registered a case of murder under relevant sections of the IPC at the Shahbad Dairy police station.

A native of Janti Kala village in Sonepat, Anand Singh joined Delhi police as a constable in 1988. He is survived by his 75-year-old mother, Premwati, wife Naresh Devi and a 22-year-old daughter and a 19-year-old son.

Excited about his 22-year-old daughter, Priyanka, who has done a course in nursing from a private institute, Anand had planned to get married in November this year, said sources. To ensure that all the arrangements were made, he was planning to take leave and had told about the same to his family, added sources. Apart from his 22-year-old-daughter, his 19-year-old son Amit studies in a college under Delhi University.
