Boy stages own kidnapping, held

A teenaged boy was arrested by Delhi Police on Friday, who had demanded Rs 3 crore from his father after making up a fake kidnapping case.

Saurav Mandal, 19, who is a student of Class XII at Maharaja Agrasen Public School, Swatantrata Nagar, in Narela, is a resident of Punjabi Colony. His father, Ranjeet Kumar Mandal, 45, a Registered Medical Practitioner (RMP), runs a clinic in Narela.

On 21 December, Saurav went missing from his house in Punjabi Bagh, after he went out to buy something in the evening. ‘A missing complaint was registered on 23 December by his father,’ said a police official.

On 31 December, Mandal said he received a message  on his mobile, which read that his son had been kidnapped, and the kidnapper had demanded Rs 3 crore from him.

A case was registered and a police team was constituted to rescue Saurav. During the course of investigation, the call details of mobile phones of the victim were obtained and analysed. The location of these phones was also obtained, which was found to be at Bardhaman (West Bengal).

The permanent address of Mandal is also at Bardhaman. Police kept a tab on the further locations via technical surveillance and found out the number was in Uttar Pradesh, which meant the victim was on his way to New Delhi.

A team of police officials, along with mandal, was dispatched at various railway stations in Delhi, wher Saurav was apprehended. ‘He will be produced in court for statement, and the boy has returned safe and sound,’ said a police official.
