Bomb blast accused killed in jail brawl

An active member of the Indian Mujahideen, Qateel Ahmad Siddique, 27, who was arrested on 21 November 2011, was strangulated to death in the Yerawada Central Jail in Pune on Friday. Siddique was charged for the Jama Masjid attack in Delhi, the German Bakery blast in Pune, the Chinnaswammi Stadium blast in Banglore and for making an attempt to plant a bomb outside the Dagdusheth Ganapati temple in Pune.

On Friday morning, at about 10.30 am, two inmates Sharad Mohol and Alok Bhalerao strangulated Siddique, the police said. His custody with the Maharashtra Police was about to end, and he was to be shifted to New Delhi soon.

Siddique owns a house in the Nabi Kareem area of the national capital. His wife, his two-year-old daughter and Siddique's brother stay in it. He was also known as Shiraz and before his arrest from Bihar, he had planned to visit Pakistan. He was accused of getting a fake passport, numbered H6857632, made from Ranchi in the name of Vivek Mishra.

His family has alleged that the Pune police did not inform them about the killing of Siddque. 'I am not even informed about the murder of my husband in a jail. I'll lodge a complaint against the jail authorities. I thought at least the prison is safe for my husband. I can't believe that a high-security prison like the Yerawada Central Jail can take away his life. He is innocent and was not involved in any terrorist activities. I came to know about my husband's death through the media, though it was the responsibility of the prison staff to inform me. The body has not been handed over to us. What will they do with his body?' said Fatima, his wife. She spoke to

about her husband, saying that he innocent.

Meanwhile, as Maharashtra police has alleged that a member of local extortionist of Pune made a plan to kill Siddique, as he had attempted to plant a bomb outside a temple in Pune. Sources told Millennium Post that the underworld might be involved in the murder. 'Either Chotta Rajan or Yasin Bhatkal, the biggest commander of the Indian Mujahideen, is responsible for Siddique's murder. Dawood Ibrahim used to fund the IM. And Chotta Rajan, positioning himself as a 'patriotic don', could have planned to murder Siddique as he was responsible for various terrorists activities in the country,' sources in the police have said.

The Delhi Special Cell had arrested Siddique from Bihar. Later the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad shifted him to the Yerawada jail.
