Body of youth found in water reservoir

Mystery shrouds the death of a 27-year-old youth, whose body was found in a water reservoir of an under-construction building at Kasba on Thursday morning. Police said that the victim Toton Das was a resident of Murshidabad.

Preliminary investigation revealed that he used to work in the under construction building as a mason. He used to sleep in a room in the fourth floor of the building. Walls in any of the floors are yet to be constructed. Police suspect that he fell from the third floor while walking in sleep, but are yet to ascertain the exact reason that led to his death.

On Thursday morning a woman daily wage labourer saw the body floating in the water reservoir when she went to fetch water. Everyone came running to the spot hearing her cry and informed the police. Police from the local police station rushed to the spot and sent the body for an autopsy.

The police questioned the developer and other workers. They said during the interrogation that three people used to sleep in three separate rooms in the third floor and the victim had habit of walking in sleep. There were no doors in any of the rooms and he might have walked out while in sleep.

But the police officers were not ready to accept the explanation of the workers and waiting for the autopsy report. A police officer said that they were trying to ascertain whether he was in an inebriated state and whether he was being pushed from the third floor. The post mortem report will also confirm whether he had died due to the “fall from height”.

Besides the officers from the local police station, investigating officers from the city police’s detective department are also probing into the incident.
