Body of woman tourist from Delhi found in Yamuna

After relentless search operations, a badly decomposed body of the Delhi-based woman tourist, who was allegedly raped and murdered by a taxi driver while returning from Chakrata, was recovered on Thursday from the Yamuna in Uttarkashi.

According to information, the local villagers discovered the body early on Thursday and called
the police.

A senior official of Uttarkashi district police said that it was a badly decomposed body and was beyond recognition. The confirmation will come after a DNA test is conducted.

The family members of the woman have been informed. The body was recovered at the Yamuna, near Damta village in Yamunotri highway. She came here as a tourist along with a male on 23 October. On 21 October, they reached Dehradun and then headed for Chakrata the next day. On 24 October, they went to see Tiger Falls in Chakata.

After returning, they hired a vehicle driven by one Raju Das who also picked up his associates in mid-way who started misbehaving with the young woman after a while. When her male friend objected to their advances, they murdered him and threw his body in the forest near Lakha Mandal. The female tourist was raped before she was murdered and then her body was tossed into the Yamuna.

The rape of female tourist and sensational double murder case of the young tourist couple gave sleepless nights to Uttarakhand police and reminded all of the Nirbhaya case of Delhi. The young couple originally belonged to West Bengal who was residing in Delhi for the past five years.
