Body of woman found hanging from ceiling, one arrested

Mystery shrouds the death of a housewife whose body was found hanging from the ceiling at her parental house at Malanchaberia village of Uluberia in Howrah Wednesday night. Police said that the victim was involved in an extra marital affair with a youth from an adjacent village.

Recently, the family members of the youth were mounting pressure on her to marry the youth with whom she had an affair for sometimes. Police are yet to ascertain the actual reason of her death. The police are also not ruling out the possibility of foul play behind her death.

The victim, Alpana Bangal’s (35) family members and her in-laws have alleged that the woman was strangulated to death by her lover and later, hanged her from the ceiling as she denied marrying him. 

The local people staged demonstration with the dead body and prevented the police to take it for the post-mortem examination. They demanded that the youth with whom the housewife had developed an illicit relationship might have been involved in her death and hence they demanded his arrest.

The agitation was lifted after the senior police officers reached the spot and assured the villagers that action would be taken against the accused who were involved in the murder of the victim. Police also suspect that the woman might have committed suicide after she was humiliated by the family members of the youth with whom she had a relationship. 

Police came to know that the youth had been threatening her for a while with dire consequences if she did not marry him. It was alleged that the accused and his family members took the woman from her in-laws house for settling the issue. After taking her to a nearby flyover, they had allegedly beaten her up on Wednesday evening.

The victim’s family members have lodged complaint with the police saying that her boyfriend and his family members might have been responsible for her death. On the basis of the complaint police have started an investigation and held one person in this connection. They are yet to ascertain the cause of her death.
