Mystery shrouds the death of a seven-year-old girl whose body was recovered from near a jute mill at Champdani in Hooghly on Wednesday after she was missing from Tuesday evening. The victim’s family members alleged that Hari Om, a jute mill worker, had raped her and then murdered her as the victim’s father who works at the same jute mill had failed to repay a loan of Rs 11,000 to the accused.
The family members of the girl said that the accused had threatened them with dire consequences after the girl’s father had failed to repay the amount. On the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim’s family members the police have held the accused and have started a probe in this regard.
Police said that the accused, Hari was pressurising the victim’s father to repay the money that the latter had borrowed from him. As he was unable to pay the amount, the accused had threatened him with dire consequences. Police are yet to ascertain whether the accused had committed the crime to take a revenge on the family. They were interrogating the other workers of the jute mill in this connection.
In another incident, Hooghly police have arrested Akshya Parui, a resident of Serampore, for his alleged involvement in the murder of a woman. Police said that the accused brought the victim, Devi Naskar (36), to the hospital with injuries on her throat. The doctors in the hospital suspected that it might be a case of murder and informed the police who rushed to the spot and arrested Parui.
Parui, who runs a fish business at Serampore had admitted his crime in the interrogation. Police came to know that the accused had borrowed Rs 3 lakh from the woman. Police suspect that the accused might have developed an illicit relationship with the woman. Police also suspect that the accused used to visit the victim’s flat frequently.
The police came to know that a sex racket was being operated from a flat in Baidyabati where the accused used to visit. Both the accused and the victim might have been a part of the sex racket, police suspect. They interrogated the victim’s family and her neighbours.
