Body found in south, kin suspect friends

A 22-year-old youth was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Katwaria Sarai in south Delhi on Friday.  The victim was residing with his friends for the last 20 days, on the fifth floor of a building in the area.

Ankit Sharma, who hailed from Ballabhgarh in Haryana, was found dead near the building, early on Friday morning. He was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Police said the victim was under the influence of alcohol and may have fallen down accidentally from the fifth floor of the building. His family members, however, alleged foul play and said he was killed by his friends for money.

The family members and relatives of Sharma, on Sunday, held a protest outside the Vasant Vihar police station and demanded action against his friends, at whose flat he was temporarily staying in Delhi. They said that Sharma, whose father died when he was only two years old, recently sold his paternal property at Bahadurpur village in Ballabgarh and received Rs 20 lakh as his share. They said his friends might have known about the money and so they took him to Delhi along with them around 20 days ago, saying they will help him get a job.  ‘But they used him and spent his money. They recently withdrew Rs 5 lakh from his account to buy a car and the remaining amount is missing,’ they claimed.

Police said that they have received the complaint filed by Sharma’s family members but will register a case only after they receive a post-mortem report.

‘We will register a case after we get the final autopsy and forensic reports. The  matter is still under investigation,’ said a senior police officer. They added that in the preliminary report, traces of alcohol were found in Sharma’s body.   Police also found that on Thursday, around 10.30  pm, Sharma left the Katwaria Sarai flat and went to meet his friend Sunil, who had come from his native town, at Badarpur in south-east Delhi. Together, they consumed liquor and went to a brothel at GB Road.

Around 3.30 am on Friday, they returned Badarpur, from where Sunil left for his village in Ballabhgarh and Sharma returned to his friends’ flat.

‘His two friends, Kapil and Rocky, were sleeping and Sharma went directly to the terrace, from where he might have accidentally fallen down. We found his slippers and a bottle of beer on the terrace,’ said the officer.
