‘BO or film festivals don’t matter to me’

As Bhaag Milka Bhaag hits screens on 12 July, the much awaited bio-pic will be taken on by an effort of five directors in a movie called Shorts. Produced by Anurag Kashyap’s AKFPL - Shorts brings together critically acclaimed actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi and Richa Chadda and others for a set of five short films.

Millennium Post caught up with National Award winner Nawazuddin Siddiqui as he spoke about his movie and what plans he has for 2013. Nawazuddin will be seen in the movie called Mehfuz which is being directed by Rohit Pandey. Pandey had assisted on the sets of Gangs of Wasseypur
and that is where the association stems from.

Mehfuz has been described as - a story in ambiguous space and time. The city has turned mad, as violence has taken its toll. But, far away in the sounds of silence at the border of the town, a man takes care of the dead. He drags away this usual routine with every passing night. One night, he notices a strange woman wandering on empty streets. As her behavior changes, so does his journey.

Talking about his role in Mehfuz, Nawazuddin says that he plays a character who is very far away from regular life as we know it, ‘He stays aloof, in his own world, lighting pyres of the dead and clearing up after all is done. The only conversations he has are those with the corpses,’ he explains. Reminds us vaguely of the Gautam Ghose film
Antarjali Jatra
that starred Shathrughan Sinha, we interject - a bit like that and yet closer to life, adds Nawazuddin.

‘The movie is for people who want to watch quality cinema,’ says Nawazuddin, acknowledging the fact that features like Shorts  has a place only with a certain niche of audience. But Nawazuddin is upbeat about Shorts- ‘Box Office or film festivals don’t matter to me,’ he says, ‘The script matters and the character matters,’ he adds. ‘If you like the first film, you will be curious about the next film,’ he explains talking about the set of five films.

So how has life changed after the National Awards we ask, ‘Logon ka nazariyan badal jaata hai, (People’s perspectives change) but nothing else has changed, ‘ says the actor who is also waiting for the release of his next films - Dekh Indian Circus and Monsoon Shootout. And what next? ‘I want a little vacation,’ he says, ‘It has been long I have had time for myself.’

Juggling the BO with movies like Talaash and Aatma and features like Shorts is no mean feat - and we can’t wait to see him on screen again.
