Bluesy tribute to MJ

When the King of Pop died, he left behind a legacy of music that is difficult to recreate. To celebrate his death anniversary, a Mumbai-based band will pay a musical tribute to Michael Jackson in the city.

Nerverek (pronounced ‘nerve-wreak’)’, is a progressive rock-metal band formed in the summers of 2003 in Chennai by Arjun Dhanraj.

Right now, they have Ritesh Dharmaraj on drums and Ishaan Krishna on bass. Dhanraj plays the acoustics, is a songwriter and also sings.

Nerverek has opened for Iron Maiden, The Scorpions and Pain of Salvation during their India tours.

For the band, music is inborn and is about creating music without hassle of knowing notes. None of them are trained musicians. ‘We are self taught and make music. We communicate in a layman’s language and let the music speak for itself,’ said Dhanraj.

‘We learned through listening and sometimes recreating the music of other bands,’ he added. According to the band, their music is both groovy and melodious.

‘We will be singing Micheal Jackson numbers with some musician friends,’ said Dhanraj.

Some of these would be eternal hits of MJ like Dirty Diana, Wanna Be Starting, Beat It, and Black or White among others.

The band is also working on their concept album Forever And Never, which narrates a story through the music.

Like MJ’s Thriller, Nerverek wants to start their story through their first song and take it to the length of the whole album to finish the story connecting the songs.
