BJP to counter AAP over Lokayukta appointment

As the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators are preparing to take on Delhi Police and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the one day special session of Delhi Assembly on Tuesday, their BJP counterparts are fine tuning their strategy to raise the issues of appointment of Lokayukta.

??“The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is so sacred regarding the appointment of Delhi Lokayukta that it is even misleading the Delhi High Court in the matter,” said Vijender Gupta on Sunday, adding that his party MLAs will raise the issue in the House.

“The government has not taken any initiative to appoint the Lokayukta,” he added. Delhi government in an affidavit to Delhi High Court on July 24 had stated that it was following the constitutional procedure to appoint Lokayukta and the post will be filled at the earliest.

The post is vacant since November 2013 after the retirement of former Delhi Lokayukta Manmohan Sarin. According to Article 3 of the Delhi Lokayukta and Uplokayukta Act, 1995, the Lokayukta be appointed in consultation with the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and the Leader of Opposition. “Delhi government has not even issued advertisement to invite names for the post,” added Gupta.

The Delhi government has summoned special session of Delhi Assembly to discuss ‘women security’ and pass a proposal to constitute ‘commission of enquiry’.
