BJP supporters protest against Kulpi candidate, thrash party prez

BJP supporters beat up the party’s president of Kulpi block in South 24-Parganas and ransacked a party office protesting against the decision to field an outside candidate for Kulpi Assembly constituency.

Police said around 50 BJP workers and supporters on Monday held rally in the area and gathered outside the party office. There were some women workers also.

They burnt effigy of Bidyut Purakayastha, party’s president from Kulpi block and shouted slogans crticising his role to nominate Swapan Kumar Halder, a non-resident of Kulpi Assembly constituency, as the candidate.

The situation turned worse when the party supporters started beating up Purakayastha. Some tried to restrict the supporters but it was of no help. After beating up the president, they barged into the party office and ransacked it.

A huge contingent of police from Kuli police station rushed to the area and brought the situation under control. Police rescued Purakayastha.

Sources said that the supporters even tried to torch the party office but failed as the police reached the spot on time. Police pickets have been posted in the area to mind law and order situation in the area.

Mira Mondal, a woman worker of the party, alleged that Purakaysatha took money from Halder and helped him in getting the ticket to contest from Kulpi Assembly constituency. There are several allegations against Halder and the party workers are aggrieved with the decision to field such a person as BJP candidate from the area, she alleged.

Brushing aside all allegations, Purakayastha said he had no role in selecting any candidate. It was decision of the state committee to allow Halder to contest from Kulpi Assembly constituency.
