BJP may pit Smriti Irani against Rahul Gandhi

The Central Election Committee (CEC) of the BJP had a discussion and came to the conclusion that Irani could be a possible strong contender against Gandhi. They have already conveyed their decision to Irani and the official announcement is likely to be made soon.

Amethi is considered a Congress bastion but after the recent poll debacle of the ruling party in the assembly election, the candidature of Irani and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kumar Vishwas from Amethi is going to be an irritation for the Congress vice-president.

Irani, a well known television actor and a daughter of a Bengali-Punjabi family, was married to a Parsi Zubin Irani. She is a mother of three children and is a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat and known as a strong believer of BJP’s ideology. She is also close to Narendra Modi.

She was the finalist of the beauty pageant Femina Miss India in 1997 and in early 2000 she made her debut with TV series Aatish. In mid-2000, she bagged the lead role of Tulsi Virani in Ekta Kapoor’s production Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

She holds the record of winning five consecutive Indian Television Academy Awards for Best Actress (Popular), four Indian Telly Awards, eight Star Parivaar Awards and many other awards, all for her performance in the popular serial.

Her political career started in 2003 when she joined the BJP. The party gave her a ticket to the 14th Lok Sabha elections in the year 2004 from the Chandni Chowk constituency in Delhi where she was fielded against veteran political leader Kapil Sibal of Indian National Congress.

She lost the elections but continued to work for the party. She was made vice-president of the Maharashtra Youth Wing in 2004. She has been nominated as executive member of the central committee for five times and had been appointed as national secretary. In August 2011, she was sworn in as a MP from Gujarat to the Rajya Sabha.
