BJP, Left call nation-wide strike today

With one of the steepest hike in petrol prices in recent times, the opposition has called for a Bharat Bandh on 31 May. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has given a call for an all-India strike, whereas the Left parties will observe a protest day today.
Terming the government's argument that the hike was necessary as the pricing of petrol stands deregulated, the convenor of the NDA Sharad Yadav said, 'This is an eyewash. The NDA is going to observe a Bharat Bandh on 31 May.'
The Left parties, while condemning the hike, said 'This is a savage attack on people, who are already suffering from the effects of continuous price rise of all essential commodities.’ Many trade unions have extended support to the strike.
