BJP leaders attack police when stopped from visiting Dhulagarh

Senior BJP leaders on Saturday attacked the police when the latter asked them not to go to the troubled area of Dhulagarh. The incident occurred near Dhulagarh Chourastha on National Highway 6 triggering tension in the area.

It may be recalled that the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the state urban development minister Firhad Hakim in past few days alleged that the BJP was trying to fan communal tension in the state.

Chaos broke out when the members of the BJP’s central team tried to break the barricade at the Chowrasta area. They clashed with the police personnel who urged them not to proceed further as a Section 144 has been imposed in the area. But the members of the central team of BJP tried to overpower the police force but the attempt turned futile as the police made necessary arrangements to handle the situation.

Howrah rural district police officials put up barricades to prevent the BJP leaders and supporters from entering the violence-hit area of Dhulagarh. The central BJP team comprised of two MPs Dr Satyapal Singh and Jagdambika Pal and accompanied by BJP state president Dilip Ghosh and national secretary Rahul Sinha. Senior BJP leaders while returning for Kolkata expressed their wish to meet the governor in this connection.

After failing to proceed further, the members of the team and the BJP leaders conducted sit in demonstration on the National Highway 6 completely paralysing the traffic movement in the area. The demonstration continued for more than one hour and later the central team returned to the city.
