BJP leaders arrested, released later during rally

Several state-level BJP leaders were arrested following a scuffle with the police here on Wednesday. They were, however allowed to go free later, police said.

BJP leaders Ritesh Tewari and Rupa Ganguly had paricipated in the rally. While it moved to the additional district magistrate’s office, the police tried to stop them at three barricades. But they surged ahead breaking thorugh three barricades. The police put up a resistance at the fourth one and there was a scuffle. However, none was injured, the police added.

Around 1,500 BJP supporters gathered at Karunamoyee around 2 pm on Wednesday and they marched towards the SDO building. The situation turned worse when the police restricted them outside the SDO building. Police chased the party supporters when they tried to break guard rails. Senior leaders of the party alleged that the police resorted to lathicharge.
