BJP gives breach of privilege notice against JPC chief

The principal Opposition party on Monday gave notice for moving a breach of privilege motion in both Houses of Parliament against Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) Chairperson P C Chacko for leakage of the panel’s report to the media on the 2G spectrum allocation issue.

The BJP in its notice has stated that any unauthorised leakage of the JPC report is a breach of privilege of Parliament and action should be initiated against those responsible for it. BJP leaders  said the party wants that since Chacko is the chairperson of JPC,  he should explain how the report was leaked to the media.

In Lok Sabha the notice to move the motion was given by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP  Yashwant Sinha, whereas the same notice was submitted by deputy leader of Rajya Sabha,Ravi Shankar Prasad in Rajya Sabha.

Sources said that on 18 April JPC members had received an SMS stating that around 7 pm copies of the draft report will be sent to their local addresses, however, the copies of report were leaked to the media whereas the the members kept waiting till the next day.

BJP sources also claimed that report has been unilaterally prepared by Chacko and others without consulting the BJP members, and the party made it clear that it will oppose adoption of the JPC report which is scheduled to take place on 25 April.

The party has also expressed its displeasure at the accusation levelled against former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the JPC report wherein his government has been held responsible for causing a loss of Rs 42,000 crore to the exchequer due to its telecom policy.Party sources said BJP members of JPC were taken aback by the accusation against Vajpayee government in the report as the matter had not been discussed in any meeting of the panel.
