BJP disagrees with Azam’s claim on US incident

Criticising the US government for harassing any Indian during their visits, BJP national spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said that Uttar Pradesh minister Md Azam Khan’s version that he was humiliated because he is a Muslim was absolutely unacceptable.

‘BJP protests against harassment of any Indian in foreign countries but we don’t discriminate it on communal or religion lines,’’ she said. ‘Azam terming himself as a Muslim for the humiliation he faced in the US proves his communal mindset,’ she further added.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Ms Lekhi said so called ‘secular leaders’ did not oppose the US when they cancelled the visa of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi but now when Azam Khan faced the humiliation, such a hue and cry is being made.

‘’BJP has always opposed harassment of Indians anywhere in the world whether it was in Saudi Arabia during Haj,’ she said.

Ridiculing the allegation of Azam Khan blaming External Affairs minister Salman Khursid for the incident, the BJP leader said, ‘can anyone even think of interfering into the security system in US.’

In US, government and police work separately and independently and it was not like UP where politician ran the police system, she said.

Criticising the Centre for failing on the foreign policy front and projecting a perception on the world that ‘India is on sale’, Ms Lekhi said that it was only due to the weakness and misrule of the UPA government that China has captured 19 kilomters of our land in Ladakh, while Saudi Arabia is trying to send back Indian labourers back and Sarabajit was attacked in a Pakistan Jail.

Suggesting tit-for-tat policy against China like decreasing the imports and stopping the export of raw materials there, she said that by controlling trade, India could thwart any armed aggression by China.

Demanding that Sarabajit should be handed over to the Indian government for treatment, the BJP spokesperson said that there was nothing similar between Kasab and Sarabajit, as Kasab was hanged on the court’s judgement, while there was nothing such against Sarabajit.

When asked about the possibility of Narendra Modi being projected as BJP Prime Minister during 2014 Lok Sabha elections, she said it was up to the Parliamentary Board to decide.

‘BJP president Rajnath Singh has already announced that the matter would be clarified in May ,’ shes aid, while adding that she has no knowledge of whether Modi could contest for the Lucknow Lok Sabha seat in the General Elections.
